NZ Grappler in conjunction with OLIVER MMA are proud to present its first THROWDOWN TOURNAMENT on Saturday and Sunday 30-31 June 2012 at the Te Atatu Community Centre in Auckland. This event will feature a Takedown-only tournament for adults along with Submission Grappling Gi competition for Men, Women, and Kids. There will be weight divisions and Absolute, along with about $4000 in cash and prizes.

The takedown-only competition is designed to encourage more takedown techniques within the fighting sports. We welcome athletes from all sports that uses takedown techniques, such as MMA, Judo, BJJ, and Wrestling. Click here for the official rules for the takedown competition. First prize in the Absolute divisions of the Takedown tournament will be $400, and 2nd prize will be an iPod Touch. The Absolute divisions will be divided into 2 weight classes for the takedown competiton, under 84 kg and over 84 kg.

The Submission Grappling Gi competition will employ the same rules as the previous NZ Grappler No-Gi competitions with addition of holding and submission techniques using the Gi uniform. All submission grappling athletes are invited to compete, but divisions are separated by using BJJ belt ranks as a guideline. Registration Prices are as follows:

$35 Takedown OR Adult Gi division until 11:59 pm on Saturday 23rd June
$55 Takedown AND Adult Gi divisions until 11:59 pm on Saturday 23rd June
$30 Kid Gi division until 11:59 pm on Saturday 23rd June

After 23rd June, late fee is $10 additional. All registrations must be received by Wednesday 27 June 2012.

11:30 am – MEN INTERMEDIATE competition starts
11:30 am to 12:30 pm – Weigh ins for ALL WOMEN and MEN ADVANCED

[If time permits, we will run MEN INTERMEDIATE OPEN after all INTERMEDIATE divisions are done. No cash prize.]

1:30 pm – ALL WOMEN and MEN ADVANCED competition starts

SUNDAY 25 MARCH 2012

8:00 to 8:30 am – Weigh ins for all KIDS
8:30 am – Rules meeting and warm up
9:00 am – KIDS competition begins

Medal ceremony and Raffle for 2 iPod Touches for kids competitors will begin after all matches have run. Competitor must be present at raffle drawing to win a prize.

Here are some things to keep in mind:

You may enter only one OPEN or ABSOLUTE division. For example, if time permits us to run the MEN BEGINNER OPEN, and you registered for a BEGINNER weight class, then you may compete in the BEGINNER OPEN or the ABSOLUTE, but you may not compete in both.
If we are running the MEN BEGINNER OPEN, you must register for it before the end of the all BEGINNER weight classes. If we are running the MEN INTERMEDIATE OPEN, you must register for it before the end of the all INTEREMEDIATE weight classes. You must register for the ABSOLUTE before 2:00 pm.
You must weigh in by your skill level’s cut off time. This will allow us time to generate the brackets for your skill level.
All brackets will be single elimination with an extra match to determine 3rd place.
You are guaranteed at least 2 matches. If there is no one in your division, we reserve the right to merge your division with a division closest in weight or skill level. The OPEN or ABSOLUTE division will guarantee your second match.
All Adult matches are 5 minutes. All Kids matches are 3 minutes in duration. Sudden death overtime for 1 minute (first one to score wins). If still tied after overtime, lighter competitor wins.
For those staying the night at the venue on Friday night, you can arrive at the venue after 8pm. You must clear your belongings from the building before 8:30 am on Saturday so we may prepare for the weigh ins.
If you are staying the night at the venue on Saturday, you must clear your belongings before 7:30 am so we may prepare for the weigh ins.
You must have your registration fee paid before you weigh in. If you have not received a confirmation email, but you have paid by bank transfer, please bring proof of your online bank transfer. If you have made arrangements to pay at the door, please bring cash only.
For kids brackets, we will be doing our best to create brackets with kids who match the closest in weight, age, and skill level. This is not an easy task because there is such a variation among kids, so please be understanding of this. We realize that we cannot please everyone, and we welcome your comments, but we ask that you do not become disruptive if the matches are not ideal for your child or student.

NZ GRAPPLER is proud to present the first GRAPPLERS CHALLENGE No-Gi Tournament is for Adults and Kids 24-25 March 2012. Adults compete on Saturday 24th March, and Kids compete on Sunday 25th March. All competitors from all grappling disciplines and academies are welcomed to compete. This is a great opportunity for the entire family to compete at the same event, which cuts down on travel costs.

James Te Huna Seminar 4th Dec

UFC fighter James Te Huna will be coming to Oliver MMA for a special MMA seminar. Te-Huna is of Maori descent and became the first New Zealander to enter the UFC. Te-Huna racked up victories on the local circuit in Australia, but he has always flown the New Zealand flag at every fight. James has even donated large portions of his purse to relief funds for the Christcurch earthquake victims.

2011 No Gi Nationals Results

The 2011 No Gi Nationals hosted grappling matches for 232 competitors among 108 brackets. 142 adults competed on Saturday 15th October, and 90 kids competed on Sunday 16th October. The kids were matched in pools as close as possible in skills, weight, age, and gender.
